Bharat-NCAP draft approved, now cars will get safety rating on the basis of testing

New Delhi. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Friday approved the draft notification to launch India NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme). Under this program, cars manufactured in India will be given a safety rating based on their performance in crash tests. This rating will be between 1 star to 5 star. 5 star rating will be considered the best.

Bharat-NCAP will serve as a consumer-centric platform whereby customers will be able to opt for safer cars based on their star-ratings while promoting a healthy competition among OEMs in India to manufacture safer vehicles.

Exports will get a boost
The Union Minister said that star rating of Indian cars on the basis of crash tests is very important not only to ensure the safety of passengers in the cars, but also to increase the export of Indian automobiles. The India NCAP’s test protocol will be combined with the Global Crash Test Protocol factoring into existing Indian regulations, allowing companies to test their vehicles at their in-house testing facilities in India. Gadkari further said that India NCAP will play an important role in making India the No. 1 automobile hub in the world and making the industry self-reliant.

This will be special in Bharat-NCAP
Under this program, vehicle manufacturers will be encouraged to participate in the Safety Testing Assessment Program. So that higher safety levels can be incorporated in the new car model. At the same time, it aims to make cars safe for adults and children, including active and passive safety features. This program will be similar to the global NCAP, in which new car models are tested on several parameters through crash testing and they are rated from S to five stars.

This SUV got the ‘Safer Choice’ award
Recently Mahindra XUV700 has been given the Global NCAP ‘Safer Choice’ award. This is the second award for the Mahindra Group, the first being awarded to the XUV300 in early 2020. Global NCAP states that this award is awarded only to vehicle manufacturers achieving a high level of safety performance.
