India Presidential Election 2022: There is a lot of excitement in the country regarding the presidential election. The NDA has made Draupadi Murmu its candidate for the post of President, while the same opposition parties with mutual consent have fielded former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha as the candidate for the post of President. BJP has been telling itself the most trustworthy for the tribals for a long time, in such a situation, in the Presidential Election 2022, the party has made political bets by making Draupadi Murmu a candidate and trying to reach the tribal community.
So far no one from the tribal community has been able to become a President in India. There has also been a demand from the tribal community to make a person the President. The Scheduled Tribe population in the country is considered to be around 8.9 percent. In many states, these societies have the power to make and destroy the political game.
Message to tribal society by making Draupadi Murmu presidential candidate
NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu is a tribal leader from Odisha. She has also been the Governor of Jharkhand. Murmu has been an MLA from Rairangpur in Odisha. She has been the first Odisha leader who was made governor. BJP has given a big message to the tribal society by making Draupadi Murmu its presidential candidate. Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh have a large number of tribal voters. In Gujarat this year, elections are to be held in the remaining three states next year, in such a situation, NDA can get the benefit of making candidates from tribal society.
Tribal leaders have already contested presidential elections
In 2012, PA Sangma also contested the presidential election. PA Sangma used to come from Garo tribal society. However, he died in 2016 itself. He contested the presidential election against UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee but he could not win. UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee became the President of India with a vote value of 7,13,763 (69%) overtaking PA Sangma of BJP. Sangma got 30.7 per cent votes with a vote value of 3,15,987.

PA Sangma believed that tribals needed representation at the highest level in the country. He believed that the tribals have been sidelined. Teacher-turned-lawyer and then leader PA Sangma had sought support from many parties during the presidential election in 2012 but he fell behind Pranab Mukherjee. He was hoping for votes on tribal identity but could not get success. Lok Sabha Speaker in 1996 was a big achievement in his career.
PA Sangma was an MP for 8 times
PA Sangma was born in 1947 in the village of Chapathi, Meghalaya in West Garo Hills. After graduating from Shillong, PA Sangma did his Masters in International Relations from Dibrugarh University in Assam. In the year 1973, PA Sangma was elected the President of the Pradesh Youth Congress Committee. In the 1977 Lok Sabha elections, Sangma became an MP for the first time after winning from the Tura constituency. He was a member of the Lok Sabha for eight times. He was an MP from Tura (Scheduled Tribe) Lok Sabha seat during his death.
